How much does it cost to build a cryptocurrency exchange
What it costs to build a cryptocurrency exchange: development from 22,400 USD, licensing, liquidity and running costs. Developer prices with sources.
Sections7
The cost of a crypto exchange has three parts: the software, the licence and the cost of running it after launch. The software can be built from scratch or taken ready-made. Developers quote 22 thousand to half a million dollars for a build from scratch, depending on scope. Ready-made software comes as a subscription or a purchase. The licence and running costs often exceed the software itself, so plan for them from day one.
Below is what drives the price, what each route costs according to public sources, and what to calculate before choosing. Prices were collected on 2 October 2026, each with its source.
What drives the price
A crypto exchange is not one website but several systems, and each has to be built or bought:
- Matching engine — the core that matches buy and sell orders. Trading speed and reliability depend on it;
- wallets and blockchain nodes — deposits and withdrawals. Each network needs its own node or a service that replaces it;
- liquidity — without counter-orders the order book is empty. At launch it is usually sourced from an external provider;
- client checks — KYC (identity verification) and AML (checking funds for links to crime). Usually an external service paid per check;
- security — two-factor login, withdrawal controls, audit log, audits;
- interfaces — the trader interface, a mobile app and the admin panel;
- infrastructure — servers, redundancy, monitoring;
- licence and team — not part of the software, but the exchange cannot run without them.
Building a crypto exchange from scratch
Your own build gives full control over code and features, but it is the slowest route. Developer prices for reference:
| Scope | Price | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum version: web, spot only | 22,400 USD | 1–2 months plus a month of discovery |
| Scalable platform: spot and margin | 51,000–63,000 USD | 2–3 months plus a month of discovery |
| Enterprise platform, web | 403,000–564,000 USD | 4–7 months plus 1–2 months of discovery |
| Two native mobile apps | +34,000–60,000 USD | — |
Source: Mereheadopens in a new tab, article updated 6 September 2026. These are the developer’s own prices, not a market average, and the article is not fully consistent: the table above is its summary, while its tier breakdown puts two native apps at up to 81,000 USD and one section prices the scalable version at 49,000–150,000 USD. The same article prices components separately: a blockchain node at 800–1,000 USD per network, an external liquidity provider integration at 4,000 USD, a KYC and AML service integration at 1,600 USD.
Russian developer Polygantopens in a new tab (in Russian) quotes a turnkey crypto exchange from 2,900,000 roubles and a first version in 4–8 weeks.
These figures cover development only. Maintaining the code, fixing bugs and updating for new networks and requirements falls on the owner after handover: on an in-house team or a contract with the developer.
Licence
Requirements for a crypto exchange depend on the country it operates in and where its clients are. Ballpark figures from the same Mereheadopens in a new tab article:
- offshore jurisdictions such as the Seychelles — 15,000–50,000 USD;
- the European Union under MiCA — 50,000–150,000 USD;
- the United States, MSB registration and state licences — from 250,000 USD to a million and more.
Capital, staffing and procedure requirements come on top. Take this to a lawyer who works in your jurisdiction before choosing software: the regulator’s requirements decide which features the platform needs first.
We handle the legal side separately — see legal support at launch: six jurisdictions and audit preparation.
Running costs after launch
This is the part most often left out. A detailed example is the estimate for an exchange in Belarus on vc.ruopens in a new tab (Viktor Suzdaltsev, January 2022, in Russian). Preparation before launch takes 3–6 months and costs about 120,000 USD: salaries, office, regulatory documents, a security audit, servers and a Big Four audit. The first year of operation costs almost 500,000 USD. The main items:
- team salaries — 20,000 USD a month;
- core information system — 4,000 USD a month;
- computing power — from 2,500 USD a month;
- crypto transaction monitoring — 1,000 USD a month;
- verifying 10,000 clients — 30,000 USD a year;
- marketing — 5,000 USD a month;
- repeat audit — 35,000 USD.
The author also names the Belarusian charter capital requirement: 2 million Belarusian roubles. The estimate is four years old and for one country, but the cost structure has not changed since.
A small exchange starts more modestly. According to Mereheadopens in a new tab, servers for a minimum version cost 100–200 USD a month, technical upkeep — a DevOps engineer and a part-time developer — 1,000–2,000 USD a month, identity checks 1.35–1.85 USD per client at Sumsub prices.
A ready-made crypto exchange script
The second route is to launch the exchange on ready-made software. The code is already written, so the launch timeline depends on configuration and custom work, not on a build from scratch.
That is how the CryptoExchanger exchange script works. The terminal is open on the demo standopens in a new tab — it is exactly what your client gets. What it includes:
- Three market sections: spot, futures and fiat;
- trading pairs BTC, ETH, BNB, SOL and TRX against USDT;
- an order book with a selectable price step;
- a price chart with 1 minute, 5 minute, 1 hour and 1 day intervals;
- a trading panel for placing orders;
- 24-hour pair metrics: change, low, high and volume;
- a trader account: open orders, order history, trade history and assets;
- sign-up and sign-in on the exchange itself;
- Exchange and Convert sections alongside trading;
- a support section inside the interface.
We price the script per project: the set of markets, the pairs and the amount of custom work differ every time. The rest stays with the owner, just as with a build from scratch:
- Domain and server — the platform is deployed on your own infrastructure;
- liquidity — with an empty order book there is nobody to trade with;
- legal structure — the rules for exchanges are stricter than for exchangers and depend on the jurisdiction;
- a support team — traders get in touch far more often than exchanger customers.
When comparing ready-made software with a custom build, count over your own horizon, not just at launch. If the vendor sells a subscription, add up the payments over several years and compare them with a one-off build and its maintenance. And find out in advance how features the software lacks get added: they will have to be agreed with the vendor.
What to choose at launch
Building from scratch makes sense when the exchange already has its own development team, a budget for years of maintenance and features that ready-made platforms lack. Then owning the code pays off.
Ready-made software wins when you need to test the market quickly, when there is no in-house development team, or when the money is better spent on liquidity, licensing and acquiring clients than on software.
Before choosing, answer a few questions:
- which jurisdiction the exchange will operate in and what the regulator requires of the software;
- which features are needed on day one and which can come later;
- who will maintain the code a year from now;
- what the exchange costs over three years, not just at launch;
- where liquidity will come from in the first months.
